Football ticket categories are the price zones a match organiser divides the stadium into: the closer to the centre of the pitch and the lower the tier, the higher the category. VIP adds hospitality to the seat, Premium gives the lower tier along the pitch, Category 1 the upper tiers along the pitch, Category 2 the blocks behind the goals. A category number is not a single standard: Cat 1 at different venues means different seats.

The bowl of the stadium is split into price zones on one principle: the closer to the centre of the pitch and the lower the tier, the higher the category. A category number is not a standard but the internal scale of one organiser at one venue.
That is why Cat 1 at Anfield and Cat 1 at Camp Nou are different seats with a different view, and at UEFA matches the split is different again. The only thing that holds everywhere is the logic of the ladder: the top category sits in the centre of the lower tier, and the zones spread out from there towards the goals and up the tiers.

At some venues the organiser also uses Cat 3 and Cat 4: the same zones behind the goals and on the upper tiers, split more finely. The bigger the stadium, the more steps. How it looks at a specific match is always shown on the event page, for example for El Clasico: four categories on the Camp Nou tier map.
Three reasons. First, capacity: at an 80,000-seat venue the 'lower tier along the pitch' is dozens of blocks, and Premium there is wider and further from the centre than at a 40,000-seat stadium. Second, architecture: at stadiums with a running track even the front row is further from the grass than the tenth row at a football-only venue. Third, the organiser itself: at Champions League matches UEFA redraws the club's zones to its own scale, and Category 1 on a European night may not match Category 1 at the same stadium in the league.
The practical conclusion: comparing categories between stadiums is pointless; compare the position at a specific venue instead. That is why on event pages we show a tier map with category zones rather than just a list of names.
On the secondary market a ticket is sold by category, not by seat. That means you buy an assured zone of the stadium, and the block and row within it are fixed at booking, once availability is confirmed. That is how the market works as a whole, not just LuxTicket: batches of tickets are allocated by zone, and the exact seats become known closer to the match.
What a category assures: the position relative to the pitch, the tier and the level of view, and for VIP the hospitality too. What it does not: a specific row unless agreed separately, and adjacent seats for large groups without a prior request. If the front rows or six seats together matter to you, say so before payment and your concierge will confirm whether it is possible for that match.
A simple rule: the category should match what you are going to the match for.
Prices by category live on the event pages and change every week: the closer the match, the fewer open seats in the lower tiers. The competition hubs collect the biggest fixtures of the season with prices: La Liga, Premier League, Champions League.
